Q4 2026 - Daily Breach Watch

Defense Manpower Data Center (U.S. Department of Defense)

September 30, 2026

Hackers were inside the Defense Manpower Data Center, which keeps the Pentagon's personnel records, for months, from October 2025 to mid-July 2026. They took records on about 2.8 million living people and close to 300,000 people who have died: names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, sex, race and military service details. And none of it was encrypted. How'd they get in? Through a security hole in a file-sharing system the DoD hasn't named. The DoD says it has no sign the data's been misused, but it didn't say how it knows that. If you or your family served, watch for a notification letter and freeze your credit with all three bureaus, since SSNs are in the mix. Keep an eye on your statements, turn on MFA, and be suspicious of anything "from the DoD or VA" that asks you to click. In light of the recent hack on the FBI and the nature of this target, it's hard to imagine that we've heard the last related to this breach.
